  1. Fact vs. Opinion – What are the differences it makes?
  2.
  3.
  4. Let's start off by defining the two words.
  5. Fact: "Something indisputable", "Driven by rational thought", "Something with evidence to support its truth".
  6.
  7. Opinion: "Something based upon a belief, or personal view", "Something that varies according to individuals' knowledge, experience, culture, beliefs, etc.", "Driven and reinforced by emotion".
  8.
  9.
  10. To put this into context, we can imagine a (typical) clown;
  11.
  12. FACT: Clown. Coloued face. Colorful. Circus performer. Smiling.
  13. Opinion: Funny. Weird hair. Scary. Happy. Ugly.
  14.
  15.
  16. Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion is the same.
  17. A major dilemma with human psychology is that we(as humans) will sometimes take opinion as fact.
  18.
  19. I could say woman are only good for three things(Cooking,Cleaning,Vagina), and that would be my opinion. Obviously that isn't a fact. Specifically because I can think of at least one more thing that woman are good for: There sisters vagina.
  20.
  21.
  22.
  23. Perhaps one of the most influential means of difference in opinion can be portrayed through wars, in a lot of difference ways.
  24. One example is: "Hitler was a bad person".
  25. Fact: Hitler was a person.
  26. Opinion: Hitler was a bad person.
  27.
  28. These opinions are usually motivated by biased views.
  29.
  30. I can say "Hitler did nothing wrong". And if I truly think that, then that is my opinion.
  31.
  32.
  33.
  34.
  35.
  36.
  37. Proper Grammar – How does one use it?
  38.
  39. On a more 'personal' note, please everybody take out their essay paper for last weeks essay.
  40. *wait*
  41.
  42. In case somebody doesn't have it, I'll read it out.
  43. "Over the past 100 years Australian society has developed into a large multi cultural society. Women have played an important role in this. At times this has been difficult. Discuss"
  44.
  45. I'm going to point out the obvious flaw in the beginning of the text: "Australian society has developed into a large multi cultural society" - 1) multicultural is a single word. NOT two. 2) why use the word society twice?, and 3) the comma after 100 years.
  46. And the word "large" should probably have been changed to "broad".
  47. But that's not the large flaw of this text.
  48.
  49. More specifically:
  50. "Woman have played an important role in this. At times this has been difficult."
  51. The major problem is that two "this"'s are being used.
  52.
  53. And 2) The writer is biased against men, and for woman, as they are differentiating men and woman, trying to make it sound like woman are the cause of Australia's current social status. But that's irrelevant.
  54.
  55. In both cases, the pronoun is extremely ambiguous. It shows a poor grasp of the English language on the part of the writer.
  56.
  57. Pronouns are 'pointers' which are supposed to do exactly as it sounds. Point to something.
  58. "The" stands for some other word, or phrase, usually.
  59. The prefix "pro" means "for", i.e. the noun stands for something.
  60.
  61. The writer apparently wants the first "this" to point to the entire first sentence.
  62.
  63. It could be that the first word "this" refers the the implied noun "development" in the first sentence, but it's a past participle, so that shouldn't be it.
  64.
  65.
  66. There are so many possibilities of what the second "this" may refer to.
  67. Has the "important role" been difficult?
  68. Has the "large multicultural society" been difficult?
  69. Has the "Australian society" been difficult?
  70. Has the "past 100 years" been difficult?
  71.
  72.
  73. The writer of this text has created a limited double-recursive, causing the number of possibilities the text may actually mean, into the number of statements, to the power of two.
  74. In this case, it appears to be 2^2.
  75.
  76.
  77. With all of these FACTS, it is quite clear the whomever created this 'essay topic' sheet lacks the education of the English language and grammar needed to create a comprehend-able paragraph.
  78.
